The Dinky Curve  One year, as coach of the junior varsity baseball team, I had a sophomore pitcher who led the staff. He was left-handed and had a dinky little curve and a less than mediocre fast ball. The varsity coach said nothing to him, of course, but he was quite concerned about the next year. He was losing most of his staff, and he was certain that this young man could not help much.

Should I Tell the Church?  In the last fifteen or so years that I have worked in full-time ministry, I have struggled with a difficulty that has become more and more commonplace among church members: keeping their health-related problems to themselves. I became much more disturbed by this practice after my first trip to Ghana when I heard a man pray in the public assembly for the Lord to open the wombs of the women that they might bear children.

The Bible  A father was approached by his small son, who told him proudly, “I know what the Bible means!” His father smiled and replied, “What do you mean, you 'know' the Bible?” The son replied, “I do know!” “Okay,” said his father. “So, son, what does the Bible mean?”

A Matter of Attitude  Have you ever noticed that attitude and mental toughness can enable an individual to overcome great odds and obstacles? Sometimes the slower runner wins the race. Sometimes the weaker man wins the fight. Sometimes the less talented team takes the championship. Why? Attitude is the answer.

Working for the Lord  The Bible reveals God's will so man can live in such a way so as to please the heavenly Father. Scripture teaches us how to conduct ourselves in various areas of life. For example, there is instruction on how to be a good father and a good husband. Wives and mothers can learn of their duties by studying the Book of books. Children are taught how they ought to respect and obey their parents (e.g., Ephesians 6:1-4). When people conform their lives to the divine pattern society is blessed by the resulting righteous living (Proverbs 14:34).

The Bottom Line  At a typical annual shareholders' meeting, the chairman of the board gives a lengthy welcome to the attendees, followed by a flattering introduction of himself and the board. After covering numerous points of order, he then launches into a protracted speech about the corporation's vision for the future.

Rotted Wood Is Dangerous  Rotted wood can be very dangerous, especially if it is covered and not visible. As a child and teenager, we lived in an apartment over the store my father owned. The stairway to the living quarters was covered. Yet, the walkway continued uncovered to the back of the apartment. The walkway had a tar paper like covering for protection, but over the years water had apparently seeped in. I could feel the flooring give as I walked on it.

Are You Growing in Faith?  In 2 Thessalonians 1:3 Paul commended the church for its growing faith. He said, “your faith growth exceedingly and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth.” Even in the midst of trouble and trials, these newborn babes were making spiritual progress. Wouldn't it be great if this could be said of you and me?
